Module Topics

Individuals receiving applied behavior analysis (ABA) services are disproportionately exposed to adverse and potentially traumatic experiences, yet many behavior analysts report limited formal training in trauma-informed care (TIC). This professional development module introduces trauma-informed ABA as an ethical and clinically relevant framework for enhancing service delivery with individuals whose learning histories may include adversity or trauma. Participants will examine how trauma can influence behavioral responding through the interaction of learning history, environmental variables, and contextual factors. The module situates trauma-informed care within the scope of behavior-analytic practice and highlights its alignment with the BACB Ethics Code, the seven dimensions of ABA, and the Applied Care Network model of service delivery. Current literature examining gaps in trauma-informed training and the prevalence of adverse experiences among the populations served in ABA will also be reviewed. Building on this foundation, participants will explore the four trauma-informed commitments outlined by Rajaraman and colleagues (2022): acknowledging trauma and its impact, ensuring safety and trust, promoting choice and shared governance, and emphasizing skill building. Applied examples and reflective exercises will guide practitioners in identifying practical strategies for integrating these commitments into assessment, treatment planning, and service implementation.

2. Explain Trauma-Informed Care (TIC)

within the ABA scope of practice and identify how TIC aligns with ABA ethical practice and the Applied Care Network.
