Module Topics
Goal development is a central practitioner responsibility in applied behavior analysis (ABA), yet traditional approaches often rely heavily on deficit-based frameworks that may overlook client strengths, identity, and quality-of-life outcomes. This module introduces the Unicorn Goal Development framework, which integrates assessment results, cultural and identity considerations, client objectives, quality-of-life indicators, and temporal context to guide the creation of meaningful and individualized intervention goals. Participants will learn to interpret assessment data as a guide for individualized intervention planning rather than directly translating assessment items into treatment targets. The session contrasts deficit-based and strengths-based models of goal development, highlighting neurodiversity-affirming and socially contextualized approaches that prioritize autonomy, dignity, and authentic inclusion. Emphasis is placed on identifying intervention targets that align with client values, lived experience, and environmental context. Participants will also develop skills for writing clear, measurable, and contextually relevant goals that incorporate behavioral cusps, pivotal behaviors, environmental supports, and quality-of-life considerations. Practical strategies for designing mastery criteria and ensuring goals promote long-term learning, generalization, and client empowerment will be discussed. The module emphasizes how thoughtful goal development can support meaningful behavioral change while honoring the individuality and autonomy of the people receiving services.
